Proof of Concept excerpt of typebars in QWERTY.
QWERTY
[~5 minutes]
QWERTY is a ~5-minute stop motion film that features 44 typewriter typebars and paper animations choreographed to music. The film is inspired by my grandmother’s typewriter that sits on my desk—while observing it during one of my daily writing sessions, I imagined its typebars’ semicircular organization as a kind of “orchestral pit” that could be animated in various patterns. Thus, the film is a celebration of my relationship with late-grandmother—with whom I shared a passion for reading and writing—in addition to a love letter to storytelling via a perspective study of the typewriter as an architectural/design object.
Typewriter typebar stop motion choreographed to music by The Boston Typewriter Orchestra via an advanced rig in After Effects for rotoscoping in Dragonframe. 2D paper stop motion created via tape transfer of magazine images onto 35mm film leader, and printed on custom-sized paper.
You can view the animatic in-progress below featuring the completed typebar choreography.
